Defining Ministry

A big takeaway from the SALT conference was the affirmation of creative ministry as actual ministry. I've been a staff pastor in two churches, but in addition to that, I've also held roles that are primarily administrative and creative. Over the years I've been surprised at the number of people who try to diminish the value of those non-traditional ministerial roles. Most…

Conjecture, Twitter, & Biblical Illiteracy

Let me start by saying I've bombed my fair share of sermons over the years. There have been those moments where words have come of out my mouth while preaching that left my leadership team asking for further interpretation. There are also times when I've hit it out of the park completely in tune with what needed to be shared. People have thanked me years later for biblical truths I've preached that impacted them. They've also reminded me of funny illustrations that are unfortunately more memorable than the sermon lesson that accompanied them. Preachers are not perfect and mistakes will be made. However, it's imperative that our twenty-first century gospel is in tune with the heart of the first century gospel because we are…

Judgement, Potential and Listening to Sermons

I recently got my hands on a sermon intended for teens that included a portion of text from a book (which I'll leave unnamed) with an illustration about an accountant who gets to heaven and stands before God. God calls for "Robert the Missionary," but the man doesn't step forward. After God calls again for "Robert the Missionary," the accountant…

The Heart of the Story in Film

Filmmaking is all about story. Much of our work in the past year has been capturing things that are happening as we film: weddings, church spotlights, event recaps, and personal stories. Many times it's showing up in unknown territory without a complete picture of what we're getting into. We've done this a number of times. Most frequently it's going to churches on…

The Context of Love

The other day my Bible reading came from the 13th and 14th chapters of 1st Corinthians. The former is known as the love chapter. Usually it's used as a basis of love in marriage. That of course is a great application, but it's not actually the intention of Paul. Paul is writing to a dysfunctional church that had a hard time agreeing on…

On the Shoulders of Giants

Legend has it that in the 12th century Bernard of Chartres first used the metaphor of dwarves standing on the shoulders of giants. The phrase described how we can see more than our predecessors, "not because we have keener vision or greater height, but because we are lifted up and borne aloft on their gigantic stature." (John of Salsbury in Metalogicon).…

Our Calling

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post related to my calling (as a prelude to this post.) My experience really got me thinking about what we understand a calling to be. (more…)

My Calling

There are moments in life long forgotten yet their impact is never-ending. It was just a few words, and I'm guessing the missionary who spoke them would hardly remember them today. (more…)

Hate, Love, God, Family, Ministry

I recently heard a message in a church on Luke 14:26 where Jesus uses the word "hate" in a unique way to illustrate the cost of being a disciple: "If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.." Most modern interpretations…

Student Ministry Calendar

The American youth pastor has developed a reputation over the years of being disorganized.  This is due in large part to the fact that the average youth pastor is in fact disorganized.  I've talked with many fellow full-time pastors who oversee teen ministries at their church while fulfilling multiple other responsibilities.  Coupled with the increasing number of part-time or volunteer…

Reggie Recap

(Here is an article I wrote for a Youth Alive newsletter about our Reggie Dabbs Outreach two weeks ago on March 10th)  It was picture perfect.  Everything I had hoped for and yet it was still beyond what I imagined.  Over one hundred teens and parents left their seats to come to the front of the auditorium to be prayed…

Taylor Falls

We couldn't have asked for a better weekend for camping. We are with the teens from our church and leaders for fall retreat. Mark, Charlie, and I hiked to the top of the bluffs that overlook the St Croix River Valley. What an awesome view!

Coverage

The news coverage on the theft of our church audio equipment has been pretty extensive.  It's been pretty much on every local news website after being featured on Kare 11.  Sometimes when things go wrong, you know you're doing something right.  There have been so many seemingly random things happen at church the last few months that are now beginning…

Cold Cold

This morning I woke up to -18 degrees outside.  The temperature didn't get much warmer through the day... it never went above zero.  That gave me a fantastic idea for our video announcements at church

This week’s Top 3

We finished this week's Top 3 at our church last night. I think we're getting the hang of it. Other than a few sound issues, things are looking pretty good. This one was actually the quickest one we've made so far, but I think it's the best produced.

Scene Two Take One

I can't begin to tell you how busy we've been the last two weeks. We've probably only been home a handful of nights over that time. Although tiring, it's all been done with no regrets. We've had events from work, dates with friends and family, school, and church fill our days and nights. The most interesting development in these last…
