Celebrate and Honor

It was an honor to film at the Veteran's Day ceremony held by Special Forces Association, Chapter 20 at the Vietnam War Memorial on the State Capitol grounds. It was an awe-inspiring mix of reverence and celebration led by veterans and complimented by the Central High School band. Thank you to all who have served and so selflessly given themselves for our freedom.

The Green Line

I'm continuing to explore composition and framing with my 15-Second videos. I just upgraded to the iPhone 6s. I initially had no intentions to do so, but the 4k video and 1080p 120fps slow-mo was too good to pass up. So today I put it to work on the Metro Transit Green Line linking St. Paul and Minneapolis. What I love is the…

Bridge (v.)

I went out early again this morning to capture some footage around the Roberts St bridge in downtown St. Paul. This was the second time out shooting these 15-second films with no daylight. I've learned to not push the ISO too high otherwise the shots will get too grainy. As a rule of thumb for Canon DSLRs, I never go…

Remember Us

So on my way home from work I stopped by the Capitol grounds and filmed the scattered memorials. They honor vets, firemen, and other notable people like Charles Lindberg and Hubert Humphrey. Wanting to save time, I only paid for a little less than 20 minutes worth of street parking. When I got home I edited the whole thing in about 20…

MSP International

Thanks to the Pioneer Press I just discovered that the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport just opened a viewing area to the public a couple of weeks ago. So early this morning I made my way there and filmed for a while as part of my #15SecondFilm initiative. The airplanes were pretty much endless and the area they set aside is…

Single Mom Dreams

Last year I was given a bunch of post-it notes and asked to created a quick video with them. I had nothing else to go with. On each post-it note was written a dream by a single mom who had attended a retreat in central Minnesota. We took those post-it notes and kind of made it up as we went shooting…

2015.05 // Memorial Day Weekend

A little rain didn't spoil our Memorial Day weekend. We grabbed some bubble mix and had some fun getting wet in our yard.

Our Sins and the Minnesota Twins

I love the Minnesota Twins.  I know sometimes my Tigers hat throws people off, but that's more about home representation than being a fan. I come from a sports-watching family (see "Sports Moments" post from '08), but with my busy schedule the last couple years, I've limited the number of teams I completely follow (every game, stats, etc.) to just a…

I Dare You to Dream

We had a great time creating a promotional video for a Single Moms Retreat that happens in Minnesota every year. We are so grateful to the family who welcomed us into their home and let us put together this little film. Enjoy!

Kingdoms

We had the idea of putting together a video montage of our boys from the last couple of years, but weren't sure how to creatively do it. While brainstorming we were inspired first by our trip to Chicago and ascending Willis Tower and later by a random phrase that popped into my head... (more…)

2013.09 // Fort Snelling

Fort Snelling has become one of favorite destinations this year and this time we made it during World War 1 weekend. Though in my opinion their specialty era is the Civil War, they did a great job bringing the history of this early 20th century conflict to life.  The infantry drill was the highlight as they simulated attacking a fixed…

2013 // Summer

The summer of 2013 flew by quickly.  We had a lot of fun at our local park and saw a lot of movies in June.  We stayed busy in July helping run Youth Camp, but managed to take it easy in August treating the Twin Cities as our vacation destination... Fort Snelling, MN Zoo, State Fair, Vikings, Twins, Trains, and…

2013.08 // MN Air National Guard Museum

The Minnesota Air National Guard Museum was another stop on our Twin Cities tour in August.  They have Open Cockpit weekends a few times a year where there's no admission charge.  It's not too hard to find, just be sure to rely on the directions on their website and not your phone's GPS (lesson learned).  After a full vehicle inspection…

2013.08 // Fort Snelling

As part of our stay-cation we bought a MN Historical Society membership for $90. It includes access for an entire family + 2 guests to a number of historical sites all across Minnesota including Fort Snelling. Fort Snelling has special weekends throughout the year our favorite of which has been Civil War Weekend. It's complete with artillery drills, costumed staff…

Fort Snelling

It was Civil War Weekend at Fort Snelling in the Twin Cities.  The fort was packed with reenactors who gave verbal history as you toured each part of the grounds.  The day was complete with gunshots and a cannon firing.  We hadn't been there in years, but we picked the perfect weekend for a return visit.

Whistling Wells Farm

There's a great local farm in Afton that we visited with Lois and the Jolly family this past October.  They have an apple orchard, pumpkin patch, small farm animals, and a quaint little store with more goodies.  Elliot seemed to enjoy the farm animals and pumpkins especially.

New Kid On the Block

New kid on the block, not to be mistaken for the much older, and much less 'new' New Kids On the Block, Elliot is indeed the newest addition to our neighborhood.  Most of the families here have teens, or elementary-age kids.  When we moved in we were the only ones in our neighborhood without kids -or dogs.  As we were…

Afternoon at the Zoo

Yesterday we took Elliot to his first-ever zoo visit in Como Park.  Thankfully it was a beautiful day near 70 degrees and probably the best weather of the year so far.  He paid most attention to the monkeys, in part because they are the animals you can get the closest to, and he fell asleep about the same time we…

Labor Day

After a year off, we returned to the State Fair.  It was a perfect day - not too crowded and no sun.  We enjoyed mini-donuts, 4 pounds of fries, cookies, milk, and more.  Love the fair.

Composting Concepts

As you know, we've been tearing out a bunch of shrubs and trees around our house.  The landscaping was neglected for years and we've found it's easier to just start over on some things rather than try to redeem them.  Some friends of ours are even taking the badly placed oak tree in our backyard.  Now we have bags of…

Garage Sale Day -MN Style

It's May and as many would assume, it's perfect garage sale weather.  Yes, and yet, perhaps those 'many' are not familiar with Minnesota.  It is May 7, and I am huddled near the small space heater we were going to sell in this very garage sale, until the weather made me rethink the wisdom of that.  Besides, our poor little…
