Strict Parenting

Right away you have a million different ideas where this post is going. Some of you are having flashbacks to childhood when certain shows were outlawed in your home or when you were forced to eat vegetables you despised. For others it might bring back memories of strict faith-base values or daily chores. In our parenting, what we've laid down…

Comparison is the Thief of Joy

It's crazy how fast the video of Eli Manning's facial expression near the end of the Super Bowl spread throughout social media. What's more amazing is the assumption that he was somehow disappointed that his brother was about to win a second ring like him. I'm sure most just spun it that way for laughs, but I think many really believed he was jealous. His brother, Peyton, was later asked a question making a comparison to Eli and the number of Super Bowl rings. I love his response: We don't do that. That's not what we do. Maybe you guys, your brothers do that. That's not what we do. As a father of two boys, I respect the Manning brothers. Or better yet…

Twenty-First Century Parenting

We're in a new era of parenting facing challenges no other generation has faced before. No, we're not doomsayers lamenting on the good ol' days or Debbie Downing the times in which we live. We are hopeful because of the tremendous opportunities that lie ahead for our children. They really can do almost anything they can imagine. What we are…

2014.10 // Halloween

Howdy! The Reed posse had a blast at Halloween Twenty Fourteen! We first walked down the street to the fire station which was serving hot dogs and juice before looping around the neighborhood for candy. When we got back to the house, the gang helped hand out candy. Numbers were down for the third year in a row, but it…

2014.04 // Quinn’s 1st Birthday

Quinn had just started walking a few weeks before his first birthday celebration with family and friends on April 12, 2014 at our house. He was dedicated later that evening at our church in Maplewood by Pastor James and Pastor Mark.

Kingdoms

We had the idea of putting together a video montage of our boys from the last couple of years, but weren't sure how to creatively do it. While brainstorming we were inspired first by our trip to Chicago and ascending Willis Tower and later by a random phrase that popped into my head... (more…)

Day at the Beach

We went to a local park with a swimming pond yesterday and managed to get a quick swim in before the crowds and clouds poured in.  It was Elliot's first swim experience and he wasn't a fan of being in the water unaccompanied.

Treasure?

I opened a fortune cookie and on it was written: "You will discover an unexpected treasure." What's the protocol on this sort of thing?  I mean, now I'm expecting it, so... do I not get the treasure?

Graduation

For those who don't know, I am graduating on May 19th -wanna come? Okay, so I've had this strange color curse involving schools I attend.  I was an orange and black Oriole when I was in junior high and high school.  I was at North Central back in the day when they were the Flames.  I think the colors were…

Lucky

When I was a kid I spent countless lazy summer days diligently searching for four-leaf clovers.  I never did find one, but that didn't keep me from stopping mid-game to search a patch of clovers near me, fearing the minute I stopped looking would be when I just missed finding a four leaf clover.  To this day, on occasion, I'll…

Finger nails

The ridges on my fingernails have grown back. There they are grooved and textured. This means nothing to anyone but myself. Not many people know that my study-mates and I stopped at the Mall of America after our last Final Exam in the spring. They were taking me to the airport straight from class, but we had a few hours…

Shannon and Jill

Some of you may not know this, but my friend Shannon is pregnant.  I just think she looks super cute and I'm really excited for her, and her husband Charlie! This is Shannon with me at her house tonight (or technically last night since it's 1 A.M.).  They had a bonfire and we had a really great time -even if…

This Picture

I love this picture of me and my mom. I think she's such fun and I love her laugh. There are countless times we've shared the same kind of moment, but this one has been captured -frozen in time. And I love her laughter. I love to see her smile.

Update on Dad

It's 4:44pm on Friday here in Michigan. My dad is sleeping right now in the Critical Care Unit. Tomorrow he will be moved to Hospice a couple floors up. This morning the doctor filled us in on what happened. It seems that he had pneumonia that helped feed a blood infection and bacteria in the blood. Coupled with an already…

Beth and I

We went to TGIFridays tonight after church for a birthday dinner for me with our friends. We happened to have two servers because we caught one on the tail end of their shift. When each of the servers was informed on separate occasions that the get-together was for my birthday, they asked how old I was. They were both startled…

Shout out to Pachick-a-chick

I've always liked how there are words or phrases that say one thing but sound like they could mean another. Like that time with Lonni Pachick-a-chick and Shannon in the Cote's kitchen (hm. Cote's Kithchen, sounds like a restaurant). Shannon said the word "appear." I thought she said "Up here." Lonni thought she meant "a pier." It was basically pretty awesome.
