I must admit that I don’t follow sports as much as I used to. I couldn’t tell you the last five superbowl champions or the last three stanley cup winners, and every year I have no clue who to choose for the NCAA tournament. There’s really only one team I’ve followed closely the last five years (with the exception of the 2004 Timberwolves)… the Minnesota Twins.
They recently traded Johan Santana and at first I was really disappointed. It doesn’t look like they got much from the deal with the Mets… just four prospects (or gambles). But the bottom line is that Santana’s heart hasn’t been in Minnesota lately and the second half of last year’s season was… uninspired. His W/L record and ERA was well below average, and aside from his 17 strikeout game, there really weren’t any highlights. He gave up more home runs than he ever has and for the first time when you heard someone say, “Santana’s on the mound”, it didn’t mean a guaranteed victory.
It’s sad to see him go, but I think it was time. A wise move for the Twins organization. They’ve banked on players who have their hearts in Minnesota – Mauer, Morneau, and Cuddyer. I just hope they can find some pitchers with heart.
