Missing Europe

Yesterday we had some friends over to our house and popped in our Christmas DVD from 2006.  That was the year we spent eighteen days in Europe.  A majority of that time was spent in Italy beginning with the Island of Capri.  Every time we revisit that video, I get a kick out of how young our nieces and nephews…

Based on a True Story

This week I watched Moneyball again for the first time since seeing it in the theater.  If you haven't seen it yet and you love baseball I definitely recommend it.  It's an excellently crafted story based on the 2002 Oakland A's and their general manager, Billy Beane (Former Twin).  It's really a David versus Goliath tale that shows how low-payroll…

Happy 2012!

We welcomed in 2012 by bundling up Elliot and taking him outside for his first true Minnesota winter experience.  He was more confused by the snowsuit than the snow itself.  What was his reward for persevering the cold?  A solo attempt at eating spaghetti!  He did a fine job.  Now if we can just teach him to clean himself up...

Whistling Wells Farm

There's a great local farm in Afton that we visited with Lois and the Jolly family this past October.  They have an apple orchard, pumpkin patch, small farm animals, and a quaint little store with more goodies.  Elliot seemed to enjoy the farm animals and pumpkins especially.

Noisetrade.com

I've known about noisetrade.com for a while, but haven't really explored it much until tonight.  If you'd like to discover new music as well as some hidden well known gems, you have to check out the website.  It's all free music with an email and a ZIP code.  There's also a way to tip, tweet, or purchase the album via…

The Inception’s on You

If Inception was thirty seconds longer, you would have seen the top topple.  When I first saw the movie last summer, the collective gasp of all of us in the theater foretold the endless debate that was to follow.  It was all based on the question, "Was Leonardo DiCaprio still dreaming?" I watched it again and am fully convinced that…

Oklahoma City Memorial

A couple months ago I had the opportunity to visit the memorial in honor of the victims of the Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing.   From the reflecting pool to the survivor tree, every element was fascinating and full of meaning. The museum was particularly moving.  Seemingly every detail was thoughtfully included.. timelines, evidence, video, audio recordings, and even the axle…

Day Trip to Duluth

With my mom in town last week we decided to take a quick trip to Duluth on Thursday.  We went to see the Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls, and downtown.  We couldn't resist dinner with Grandma at Grandma's either.  Elliot seems to enjoy the day and didn't mind the cold at all.  Thankfully Grandma had a nice red hat to…

Elliot’s First Taste of Real Food

A couple days back Elliot had his first taste of real food other than milk and cereal.  He seemed to really like his carrots... both in his mouth and out. Since then he's tried beans, squash, and sweet potato and he likes his veggies.  He's making progress on many fronts and I think he's getting pretty close to crawling.  He…

Sun Country Wing It

Every Tuesday night I swing over to suncountry.com to check out their wing-it fares in the hope that the dates and price will line up perfectly for a spontaneous trip somewhere in the US.  They offer cheap fares every Tuesday night for upcoming weekend flights.  It brings me back to 2007 and the inadvertent overnight day trip to New York…

I Swear It’s the Tooth!

This little boy of ours is speeding right into teethdom.  He's just shy of four months and yesterday we discovered his first tooth coming it!  It seems weird that he's getting a tooth when he doesn't actually chew anything yet.  Those days are fast approaching, so I'm just enjoying each small change, while still savoring the charming sameness of Elliot.

Spring is in the Air

After a week of hitting close to 90 degrees and then dropping into the 40s, today the sun was shining and a great opportunity for some outdoor shots.  The family pictures are from Easter.

29 Months Pregnant

It was three years ago this month that Jill, Beth and I went skydiving in San Diego.  It was our "extreme" weekend when we also learned how to surf.  Since then we've shown our skydiving video in church a couple times to illustrate a message. We showed it this past September for one of our series and afterward we had…

Obi-Wan Kenobi is Dead

I know I shouldn't like this because this parodies the US as the Galactic Empire, but it is one of the most creative web pages I've seen in a while.  I especially love Yoda's comment on the article... "Until body I see, believe it I will not."   Check it out for yourself: http://bit.ly/jOmU4G

New Kid On the Block

New kid on the block, not to be mistaken for the much older, and much less 'new' New Kids On the Block, Elliot is indeed the newest addition to our neighborhood.  Most of the families here have teens, or elementary-age kids.  When we moved in we were the only ones in our neighborhood without kids -or dogs.  As we were…

Afternoon at the Zoo

Yesterday we took Elliot to his first-ever zoo visit in Como Park.  Thankfully it was a beautiful day near 70 degrees and probably the best weather of the year so far.  He paid most attention to the monkeys, in part because they are the animals you can get the closest to, and he fell asleep about the same time we…

I Am Tougher Than A Desert

As it turns out, Matt and I are tougher to survive than a desert.  For fun, I'll use a favorite desert of mine as an example.  The Great Sandy Desert (gotta love those Australian's and their naming prowess, this creative name makes me laugh almost every time I think of it).  Matt and I are deadlier to a cactus than…

A World Undone

A World Undone is a detailed account of World War 1 and the events surrounding.  The author, G.J. Meyer, creates a historical retelling set apart from other author attempts by adding "Background" chapters in between every chapter of chronological events.  These background chapters explore everything from Franz Ferdinand and Lawrence of Arabia to the various ethnic groups that now comprise…

Chocolate Lava cakes? Yes Please.

Browsing the shopping aisle, Betty Crocker's new Decadent Supreme  cake mix caught my eye.  Molten Lava.  Yum...  I waited a while to make it, and today just seemed right (probably because I have the day off, and also maybe because I could smell on the fall breeze that this is in fact a molten lava kind of day).  If anyone…

USS Midway

Last week my mom and I toured the aircraft carrier USS Midway docked in downtown San Diego.  It was cool to see how a crew of up to 4,000 people lived and worked together - it was a small city in use for 45 years... from the Cold War to the Persian Gulf.

Labor Day

After a year off, we returned to the State Fair.  It was a perfect day - not too crowded and no sun.  We enjoyed mini-donuts, 4 pounds of fries, cookies, milk, and more.  Love the fair.
