Strict Parenting

Right away you have a million different ideas where this post is going. Some of you are having flashbacks to childhood when certain shows were outlawed in your home or when you were forced to eat vegetables you despised. For others it might bring back memories of strict faith-base values or daily chores. In our parenting, what we've laid down…

Comparison is the Thief of Joy

It's crazy how fast the video of Eli Manning's facial expression near the end of the Super Bowl spread throughout social media. What's more amazing is the assumption that he was somehow disappointed that his brother was about to win a second ring like him. I'm sure most just spun it that way for laughs, but I think many really believed he was jealous. His brother, Peyton, was later asked a question making a comparison to Eli and the number of Super Bowl rings. I love his response: We don't do that. That's not what we do. Maybe you guys, your brothers do that. That's not what we do. As a father of two boys, I respect the Manning brothers. Or better yet…

2016.01 // Elliot’s 5th Birthday

For the record, Elliot has never seen a single Star Wars movie... yet. That hasn't stopped him from loving it though. He really wanted a Star Wars-themed birthday party, and being fans ourselves, we couldn't resist!

Running on Empty

A while back running was my thing.  Not a thing I consistently loved, even then, even when I was pretty good at it.  It was a thing I did, regularly and without thought.  I was disciplined to do it. Two kids later, with the constant desire to sleep rather than lace up my shoes and beat the pavement, I have…

Don’t forget where you came from

The other day we went "monkey climbing" in our front yard. We have a decent sized tree that has just the right thickness of branches and enough spacing to get 15-20 feet up in a hurry. For our little guys it's the perfect starter. Elliot was pretty eager to get some elevation and was probably ten feet up with a…

Twenty-First Century Parenting

We're in a new era of parenting facing challenges no other generation has faced before. No, we're not doomsayers lamenting on the good ol' days or Debbie Downing the times in which we live. We are hopeful because of the tremendous opportunities that lie ahead for our children. They really can do almost anything they can imagine. What we are…

2015.05 // Memorial Day Weekend

A little rain didn't spoil our Memorial Day weekend. We grabbed some bubble mix and had some fun getting wet in our yard.

2015.05 // Vietnam

I had a good time traveling to Vietnam last week with a couple of friends. It's an amazing country with incredible people and great food (except for durian). We had a lot of fun experiencing the culture and cuisine of Ho Chi Minh City.

2014.10 // Halloween

Howdy! The Reed posse had a blast at Halloween Twenty Fourteen! We first walked down the street to the fire station which was serving hot dogs and juice before looping around the neighborhood for candy. When we got back to the house, the gang helped hand out candy. Numbers were down for the third year in a row, but it…

2014.08 // Vacation Pt 1

Our 2014 vacation officially kicked off with Haley on Valleyfair Day on August 7th. We spent some time riding the rides before hitting the road for Pennsylvania. After driving through the night with a small early morning nap in Indiana, we finished off the last leg and made it into Pittsburgh. We spent a few days with family on the…

2014.04 // Quinn’s 1st Birthday

Quinn had just started walking a few weeks before his first birthday celebration with family and friends on April 12, 2014 at our house. He was dedicated later that evening at our church in Maplewood by Pastor James and Pastor Mark.

Kingdoms

We had the idea of putting together a video montage of our boys from the last couple of years, but weren't sure how to creatively do it. While brainstorming we were inspired first by our trip to Chicago and ascending Willis Tower and later by a random phrase that popped into my head... (more…)

My Calling

There are moments in life long forgotten yet their impact is never-ending. It was just a few words, and I'm guessing the missionary who spoke them would hardly remember them today. (more…)

29plans 2014

For the past year I've been working on a Bible reading plan and I now have it finished in time to share for 2014. I was inspired by the simplicity of the First Steps SOAP reading plan which I promoted as a youth pastor a couple years ago. I'm personally not a fan of reading the Bible in large chunks…

2013.10 // Halloween

The Reed Family went with a space theme this year. Elliot enjoyed being an astronaut and Quinn rocked his stars sleeper.  We took the boys around to our immediate neighbors before getting to work handing out candy.  Although our overall total was down from year's past (173 overall, 131 kids), we love that giving out candy is the funnest part…

2013.09 // Fort Snelling

Fort Snelling has become one of favorite destinations this year and this time we made it during World War 1 weekend. Though in my opinion their specialty era is the Civil War, they did a great job bringing the history of this early 20th century conflict to life.  The infantry drill was the highlight as they simulated attacking a fixed…

2013 // Summer

The summer of 2013 flew by quickly.  We had a lot of fun at our local park and saw a lot of movies in June.  We stayed busy in July helping run Youth Camp, but managed to take it easy in August treating the Twin Cities as our vacation destination... Fort Snelling, MN Zoo, State Fair, Vikings, Twins, Trains, and…

2013.08 // MN Air National Guard Museum

The Minnesota Air National Guard Museum was another stop on our Twin Cities tour in August.  They have Open Cockpit weekends a few times a year where there's no admission charge.  It's not too hard to find, just be sure to rely on the directions on their website and not your phone's GPS (lesson learned).  After a full vehicle inspection…

As part of our stay-cation we bought a MN Historical Society membership for $90. It includes access for an entire family + 2 guests to a number of historical sites all across Minnesota including Fort Snelling. Fort Snelling has special weekends throughout the year our favorite of which has been Civil War Weekend. It's complete with artillery drills, costumed staff…
