Okay, I know most people who know me well will not be surprised by this, but I have not seen the movie Beetle Juice. In fact, for some reason in my mind I pictured Jonny Depp in the movie (though what I’m really picturing is him as Edward Scissor Hands), but I think it was that guy who was Mr. Mom and Batman (talk about a wide range of acting). What’s his name? Let me ask Matt… he says it was Michael Keaton. Yes, good ol’ MK. My point in writing has very little to do with the movie, and more do with the fact that we have nasty Japanese Beetles eating the leaves on all our foliage in the yard. They stack onto a leaf, sometimes four or five bugs at a time, and chew it until it has more holes (way more holes) than Swiss cheese.
We bought traps for them -very complex and sturdy. Okay I admit they’re just plastic bags with pictures of beetles on them (is this to attract the beetles or to make us, as consumers, feel like this will actually work?). The bags are supposed to be hung up around the yard (from trees or on stands) and apparently they call in these beetles with a siren song, or scent. I’m not sure what’s in the plastic cartridge attached to the bag, but it is rumored to be filled with something more tempting than my Swiss Chard leaves, more delectable than our Birch tree, and sweeter than the mystery bush in the front yard. It is… Beetle Juice. At least, that’s what I call it. I’m hoping it works and that we trap every last leaf-eating beetle in the bags. What we do with them after that is a problem for a different day.
For now I’m just going to sit back and let the Beetle Juice do its work.
